UK Billionaire Donates To Save Belize Turneffe Atolls

by Admin on March 26, 2013

Britain’s richest woman, Kristy Bertarelli, a former Miss UK turned songwriter, has donated millions to set up a marine reserve off the coast of Belize in the Turneffe Atolls. She has the help from her husband, Ernesto Bartarelli, a Swiss biotech magnate.
They have set up a charitable trust called the Bertarelli Foundation which promotes their passion for marine conservation. Previous donations have funded the British government’s designation of the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean as the largest no-take marine reserve.
The goal of the foundation is to create a marine reserve in the Turneffe Atolls that will “enable Belize to get within reach of its target of protecting 20% of the seas within its jurisdiction – which makes it a beacon for marine protection around the world.”
