Major Sewerage Project Coming to North Ambergris Caye, Belize

NorthAmbergrisCayeBelizeThis is huge news for vacation property owners and investors who are currently living in North Ambergris Caye, Belize. This is great publicity to buyers who are considering owning/investing in the northern island area. North Ambergris Caye refers to the area of the island that is north of the Sir Barry Bowen Bridge, up to the protected lands near the Mexican border. The announcement is substantial because this is where most of the new developments are being built with residential properties and hotels. This will continue the strong tourism growth for the island. I feel this is a very smart move by the government of Belize. Tourism is the life blood of Ambergris Caye and the entire country of Belize. As the infrastructure improves throughout the island, it increases the value of the properties near these structures. Feel free to visit Ambergris Caye properties on our website that will be near the new project.
The project is being funded by the Caribbean Development Bank in conjunction with the Government of Belize overseen by Belize Water and Sewerage Limited. The San Pedro Sun states “the project will be a reverse osmosis desalination water treatment facility, sewage treatment facility and approximately 15 kilometers of linear infrastructure for water-mains, sewers and 15 waste treatment pumping stations.” The location of the facility will serve the areas north of the bridge, all the way to the Blue Reef Island Resort. The water and sewage line will run along the northern road that leads to this area of the island.
The issues being raised about the sewage facility is that it won’t serve all the communities that need its services. It will be an improvement to the 22,000 permanent residences of Ambergris Caye. However, the underserved community of 600 in San Mateo will not have access to this new facility. The project did not receive enough funding to provide the infrastructure to accommodate San Mateo. Most San Mateo residents will have to use their substandard septic systems. However, there is funding for the community to have an entrance access to the water/sewer lines provided by the new facility. This will be done so when new funding is initiated, San Mateo’s future infrastructure can immediately access the system. The great thing for buyers and vacationers is none of the hotels, resorts, and expat residences are located in the San Mateo area.
